Niche Blog
epilepsy.gif
  • Hello, I`m Jessica Turner. I have currently started my own niche blog. Anyone may visit it at: **http://learning-epilepsy.blogspot.com/** I was diagnosed with Epilepsy when I was six years old. I had a very trialing childhood, because at the time I was having very bad episodes. I was averaging having seizures 13 times a day. As a adult, I now like to learn more about this illness because I have a better understanding of everything. My goal is to help share my experience and to try to make people more informed about Epilepsy. There is information on what to do incase someone has a seizure.Feel free to comment or add suggestions. I am trying to make it as appealing as possible, so any input in greatly appreciated.

Add a Program to a TI-89 Plus Calculator
  • In my TI-89 Plus calculator, I added to my programs log converter and how to calculate interest. To put the new program in, I went to prorams and at the top it says NEW. I went over to NEW and put in the formulas to calculate interest. Calculationg interest is a very important lesson to know. In life, one will be calculating interest a large amount of the time. To buy a house, car, or anything that could have compound interest. I thoughht by putting in this formula, it would be beneficial for me in the long run because I will have used it a lot so I will have a better understanding of how to use it. In the calculator, I also put in the formulas for log convertor. Log converting is basically dealing with exponents. I wanted to program this into my calculator because in college math we frequently used this function. I know once I am in college, I will probably have to use this function again so in the future it will be very helpful for me to have.

My compare and contrast of two college visits:
As a senior, there are so many aspects taking a toll on my year. There is the worry about filling out FASFA and also making sure to complete scholarships. The main question that needs to be answered is which college is the best place to attend. In my situation, it came down to two colleges. I ended up with Ohio Northern and Ashland being apart of my final choices. To help me make my final decision, I decided to go on a college visit, so I could help narrow my search.

At each college, it was hard to make one final decision on which University is the best to attend. They were both so different, but still had many similarities. I knew that I had to make my final decision, so I had to look at many aspects. I know I need to feel comfortable and it as well needs to be affordable.

When I arrived at Ashland, I instantly felt welcomed. The students were very friendly and sociable. When I got lost on campus, an education major student offered to give me a ride to the admission office. The difference from Ashland to Ohio Northern was very drastic. At Ohio Northern, it was not that the students were mean or cruel; they did no come off as very friendly. Their attitudes made me feel uncomfortable and nervous. Another very important I looked at was cost. At Ashland, they automatically give you financial aid based on your GPA and ACT score. Where as at Ohio Northern, it is more difficult to receive aid because they prefer a very high GPA and ACT score. The reason for this is Ohio Northern is very prestigious and highly ranked in standards. In the end, it can be looked as not so much a negative characteristic, but in a sense a positive reason as to why it is like that.

Ashland and Ohio Northern can be two very different colleges, but they do have some similarities. For instance, they are both known to be smaller schools. The amount of students that attend that college are smaller in numbers. The campus is also smaller is size. Not only is the campus small, but the town they are located in is rather small. Another key similarity is Ashland and Ohio Northern both offer free school dollars through their university. At Ashland they are known as Eagle dollars, and at Ohio Northern they are known as Polar dollars.

When I look back at each experience, each school had its strengths and weaknesses. As I decided on which college I wanted to attend, I realized it is not which one is better, but which one is right for me. At Ashland, I felt comfortable and at home which is highly important to me. In the end, I decided that Ashland was where my future lays.

Advantages of Ashland
  • Close to home
  • Receiving Financial aid
  • Friendly environment
  • Small school
  • Beautiful Campus
  • Renovated Dorms
  • Great food
Disadvantages of Ashland
  • The school as a whole is costly
  • Hard curriculum
  • Dorms are not real large

Advantages of Ohio Northern
  • Small campus
  • Highly ranked
  • Large Dorms
  • Good student to professor ratio
  • Brother attends this college
Disadvantages of Ohio Northern
  • Very costly
  • People do not seem very friendly
  • In the middle of no where
  • No financial aid offered

When I first watched Food Inc I was appalled. I never really understood why people became vegetarians; I just stereotyped them into the “animal lover” category. I can now see why they choose this lifestyle. As I watched the way the company`s treat their animals, it was just heart breaking. It is inhumane in my opinion. They are in poor environment conditions, which is unhealthy for the animal and potentially the individual who eats it. In my opinion, the chickens had the worst lifestyle. They were being raised to gain more wait than natural, so they could barely walk. It could be hundreds to over a thousand of chickens in one barn. The way they treated not only the chickens, but the pigs and cows is just mind blowing. I never personally thought about what I eat, but now I give it another thought. The food industries try their hardest to make sure we see what they want us to say. Who knows what else they are hiding from us. I now always wonder, what am I eating?

  • Original Poem written in a foreign language

A warm breeze on my face.
A spring dress with lace.
I am so happy in the fall.
Even the birds love to call.
The sun bightens my day.
At night a clear sky and bright moon guides the way.
To another happy beautiful day.

Una cálida brisa en mi cara.
Un vestido de primavera con encaje.
Estoy muy feliz en el otoño.
Hasta los pájaros del amor llamar.
El sol bightens mi día.
Por la noche un cielo claro y brillante luna guías del camino.
A otro hermoso día feliz.

  • La Leyenda del Espantapajaros

I decided to review the film La Leyenda del Espantapajaros. This movie is known as the legend of the scarecrow. For me, it is not my particular type of movie. It was a animated movie and is known as a short film. Although it is not a movie I would normally go and watch, it had a good story behind it all. In today`s world, scarecrows are known for scaring off crows that may hurt the farmers crops. Well, no one has ever really thought about how this whole idea got started. In the movie, the scarecrow did not want to be known as scary. He wanted to know why the crows and no one else would come near him. He soon later found out that his purpose in life was to be scary to protect the crops. Once he knew his purpose, he went to the farmer to try and create a new way of life, a non scary one. Well the farmer saw this as a sign of the devil that the scarecrow could talk. So the farmer, as well as the other farmers in the area, burnt the scarecrow to his death. If one was to look at this in a deeper meaning, we can see how the legend got started. The scarecrow never wanted to be scary, but due to the what the humans wanted they just got that lifestyle. For the Spanish culture, they look deep into the spirit of life, and I can personally see why this legend was created. It became a tradition for the burning of the scarecrow. That ancient story was what started the use of the scarecrow. Un evento puede iniciar una tradición memorable. Otherwise said as, one event can start a memorable tradition.

  • House of Worship

On every Sunday, one may see me at Covenant Christian Church of God at 10:45 in the morning. I personally like to consider myself as Christian, but I also claim no demonation. I like to go by this title because I like all types of religions and churches. I do not like to narrow myself to just one. The church I attend is a no denomination church, but does have many Pentacostal people there. This type of church got my attention because it is a church that is full of energy and gives great sermons. It just always has my attention. Well I decided to go out of my comfort zone and experience a new type of church. On March 7, 2010 I attended the Baptist church by East Knox High School. It was very different than what I am use to. It is very structured and routine, where as my home church you may never know what could happen. Although, it was different I still enjoyed the sermon that was given. It gave a good lesson about the Lord, and that is why I go to church. I like to receive a better understanding of the bible, and I was able to receive a new view by a different religion. Although there views are semi different than mine, I like that their`s was. I like having options and being able to evaluate from different points of views. There church is more common for the older generation, but I appreciated that they made me feel comfortable in a new setting. These are major reasons why I do not like to label myself to one religion. I like to experience different views and opinions and how one church functions to another. I feel that at every church, there is always some type of factor I will enjoy. Although this church was a great experience, I would still find my church to be the church I will be attending five years from now.

  • Constitution

I propose that there needs to be a new amendment added to the Constitution suggesting that there needs to be a amendment regarding having to recycle. I believe that people should have to recycle and garbage companies that pick up trash need to also do recycle pick up. I know many people who want to recycle but find it just to be a hassle to take trash to get recycled because there garbage companies will not do recycle pick up. On the news, we always hear about landfills being consumed and the pollution is reaching its highest each year. This is all true, but people need to go pass just stating the obvious. There is organizations that try to make the world more go green and environmental friendly, but that is not aways enough. Recycing can help reduce the pollution, and the "talk" of global warming in the world. Recycling helps reduce greenhouse gas emissions and as well as conserves our natural reources. It also saves energy, creates clean air and water, saves landfill space, and can save money and create jobs. The benefits of recycling can go on for a very long time about how it is so important and beneficial to recycle, but the only way to get this act into movement is by creating an amendment or law that forces people to recycle. The word force seems harsh, but it is more of a contributing factor to the environment. So, I would like to propose the idea that we create a 28th amendment stating that all citizens must recycle and garbage companies must start doing recycle pick up.

FACTS:
  • Recycling 1 aluminum can saves enough energy to run your TV for 3 hours.
  • More than 36% of the fiber used to make new paper products in the United States comes from recycled sources.
  • Americans threw away 38 billion plastic water bottles in 2006.
  • Recycling just 1 ton of aluminum cans rather than throwing them away conserves more than 207 million BTUs, which is the equivalent of 36 barrels of oil or 1,655 gallons of gasoline.
  • In 2006, the national recycling rate of 32.5 percent prevented the release of approximately 49.7 million metric tons of carbon into the air.
  • In 2006, nearly 7 million tons of metals were recycled in the U.S.
  • Every ton of mixed paper recycled can save the energy equivalent of 185 gallons of gas.

Using Delicious

I currently just started using Delicious. I originally had no idea it existed. I knew that Miss.Colopy liked to use it, but I did not know how helpful it was. When I first heard of Delicious,I was not to sure of what it was. I learned to see that it is a helpful and convenient way to bookmark common websites one may go to. I have already booked marked several such as wikispaces, current events, gmail, yahoomail, youtube, and as well as facebook. These are all websites I go to frequently when I get on the internet and it is very helpful to know that I can go on my Delicious and just do a few clicks, and I am on my favorite websites. At first I was not abe to find how to save the bookmarks, but I soon found the save a new bookmark in the right hand corner. I actually look at this as a flaw because it is not very noticeable when looking plainly at the screen. The website is not full of color, so trying to find my way through this site got difficult at times. I think that Delicious needs to find more appealing colors to make it attractive to the public. I do appreciate how simple it is once I have saved my bookmarks because all I have to do is click on the big button marked bookmarks, and I am at all my favorite websites. The whole idea of Delicious just helps users on the computer in a much more beneficial way. I know that once I am in the workplace, and if my job consists of using a computer frequently, Delicious will be very useful to have.

Google Reader

Above, I tried to add a video that I thought would make using Google Reader easier and more complex to use. I personally found this website to be very difficult to understand and work with. I even found the directions on how to use it were very difficult to comprehend. Once I did figure it out, I began to subscribe to feeds that I knew I would use and would be beneficial to have. I made sure to subscribe to the psychology feed because they had a large variety of topics with that subject, which they call all those feeds bundles. I plan on majoring in psychology in college, so having that as a subscription will be potentially very useful to me. I as well subscribed to the Bible and google feed. In my life, church is a huge part of me, so I liked the articles and websites that went under that category. I also subscribed to google because I use google almost everyday. So all categories and subcategories of google are incorporated with that. So it is useful to me when I shall need important information. Although it is a useful resource, I find google reader to be more for the adult crowd. It is not as complex to work with, and I believe that is a huge flaw because teenagers will not be able to work with it as much. I think they need to try and make it more teenage friendly. Although it is hard to work with, I think google reader can help me excel in psychology in college. It might not be teenage friendly, but I have found that I do use it to look up important information regarding the news and education.

Comparative Analysis of costs/pries around the world

A widely known and talked about topic in the world is gas prices. As a current driver, the gas prices are very high and seem to barely fluctuate. This is a major issue in the United States, so I wanted to take a look around the world at other countries gas prices. It may seem that our gas prices are outrageous, but compared to other countries we are paying little. In Amsterdam, they are paying $6.48 per gallon, and in Paris they are paying $5.54 per gallon. On average, to fill up a SUV it could take between forty to fifty dollars at $2.79 a gallon. To be out in one of these countries, one is looking at paying more than $80.00 worth of gas. A major question is why are gas prices so high. It is said that prices are based around the economy and the supply and demand factor. This is a very controversial topic because it is based off the economy, but we are currently in a recession so having prices extremely high seems to contradict basing it off the economy. Jobs are limited right now, and people are low in money, so it seems outrageous to make gas prices so high to where no one can afford them.OPEC countries have essentially all of the world’s spare oil production capacity, and possess about two-thirds of the world’s estimated crude oil reserves. Oil prices have said to regard around the disruptions in the international and domestic supply of crude oil. I know I have never personally thought about the price in other countries. I always thought it was just the United States that was being impacted because of the war in Iraq. I now know that I was wrong. We are not the only country being affected by the price of gas.

hot_flat_and_crowded.jpg

I read Hot, Flat, and Crowded: Why We Need A Green Revolution, by Thomaw L. Friedman. I found this book to be very educational. Friedman is trying to make aware the problem with the climate change and the competition for energy. Friedman in his book goes about making aware the issue in a different way by talking about "Geo-Greenism" to help save the planet from overheating. He says it will help make the planet more innovative, more productive, and secure. All of his points in the book were very informative. I now look at Energy Technology in a new way. It looks like it would be more harmful to the environment rather than better. I believe that Friedman used very useful examples such as Hurrican Katrina to show how the climate is a problem. At the end of the book, I feel like I got a better understanding of how the climate is a important issue to take notice to.

Worldisflat.gif
The book The World is Flat by Thomas L. Friedman is a very informative book. In the book, he is discussing how globalization is being effected by work software. He goes about showing ten flatteners of the world such as the Berlin Wall, and then he is discusses the triple convergence on what caused the ten flatteners of the world. The comparisons he uses to show the problem with globalization, I found to be very creative. It was a new way to look at subject that I did not know much information on. He gave great references throughout the book. He wants to help stop this problem by fixing work skills and make jobs more adaptive. He believes that this would raise employment. Which in this recession would be very beneficial. I really appreciated how he thought about the youth and how we need to get inspiration in mathematics and engineering since the percentage has decreased. He reached out to not only adults, but as well as the youth. It is very important to do that because it adds diversity to the book. After reading the book, I believe I have a better understanding of globalization.

blender.jpg
In chef 2, a project we had to conduct was to get a kitchen appliance and present to the class (audience) how it works and how to use it. We also had to create some type of food to the class using our piece of equipment. For my project, I got the blender. I created mocha frappes and made skones. During my presentation, I had to explain how to use the blender and some information about the blender. With the blender I had, it had a easy clean button. So all you have to do is put water with some soap in the appliance and pure the easy clean button and it cleans out your blender; All you have to do is rinse dry. Many already knew to not emerge the blender in water while it is plugged into a outlet, and that you need to be carful because the blade is very sharp. I also explained the buttons on the appliance, such as the grind button is for thicker substances. The audience was very sociable and would answer my questions as well as ask me some. At the end of the demo, the class had a better understanding on how the blender works, and they as well as enjoyed the food and drink.

habits.jpg
The book Habits of Highly Effective People by Stephen Covey, I found to be the most interesting out of all the books I have read. I plan on majoring in psychology in college, and this book resembled many attributes that deal with psychology. His book was focusing on the relevance of the meanings of abundance mentality. Which is meaning that there is enough to success to share with others, when looking at optimistic people. Covey explains his meaning the "Upward Spiral," meaning that our conscience will spiral in growth, change, and constant improvement. He explains that it consists of three parts being to learn, commit, and do. His ideas I really valued because I thought there was a lot of wisdom behind all the meanings. It sounded like a very educational topic, and it seemed like this revolved a lot around psychological terms. This book is not only intereting, but beneficial to read because this book allows you to think on this subject. Whether you believe in his point of view or not, he gives good comparisons that make you think about the depths and truths of this subject.
arttt.jpg

In the past art years when I was in the class, we aslways attended the state art show in Columbus. Since I am not in this class anymore, I had to go visit it on a different day. Although I was not with fellow students of mine that I could discuss art with, I still very much enjoyed looking at the art work pieces. I think with each year that I attend this show. I always have a unique experience. I enjoy seeing all the different types of style that people put into a painting or some type of master piece. I always love to see how people go about things. With art there is no exact piece, and there is no right or wrong way to create a piece of art. That is why I enjoy visiting the state show because you can see everyone`s uniqueness and talent. It is a a time that you can reflect on a painting or piece of work, and try to depict what that person was thinking at that time.
